Spring 2010-Review Final Exam

 

The exam will consist of multiple choice questions and essays. The multiple choice questions will be drawn primarily from the readings after the third exam. There are some multiple choice questions from the prior exams that you should be able to answer. Below are possible essay questions.

1.  Compare, contrast and assess Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois on the promise and problems of democracy in America.

 

2.   What is the promise and problem of democracy as we face the Twenty First Century? Be sure your answer reflects your knowledge of the promise and problems of democracy as discussed in the course texts and lectures. You must refer to the writings of at least three of the following authors: Alexis de Tocqueville, Orestes Brownson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Eugene Debs, and William Graham Sumner

 

3. “The success of the American Republic is due to an alternative political tradition which recognizes that political order depends on a higher authority and civic education as much as Federalist constitutionalism.” Explain and discuss the meaning and significance of this statement using the writings of at least three of the following authors: Alexis de Tocqueville, Orestes Brownson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Eugene Debs, and William Graham Sumner
