POLS Y 103: Introduction to American Politics

Review: Exam 1

The exam will consist of multiple choice, short essay and major essay topics.  Here is a link to the practice test for the course text.  http://www.wwnorton.com/college/polisci/lowi/lowi10_brief/   In addition, be certain to review the Sources of the American Founding pages located on the course website.

Every student should be prepared to write short essay answers, one paragraph, on the topics below. Remember to refer to the Sources of the American Founding document in preparing your answers.

 

A. Possible short essays

1. Explain the difference between dual and cooperative federalism.

2. Explain the problem of liberty and order and the three solutions provided by the Founders.

3. Why are the principles of separation of powers and checks and balances important for political liberty?

 

Be prepared to write a major essay on the following questions:

 

A.        The American political tradition has been shaped by both a religious tradition and a liberal political tradition. Do you think these political traditions remain relevant to America’s future as a democratic republic? Be sure your answer demonstrates your knowledge of the influence of the religious and liberal tradition on the United States, as well as a thoughtful consideration of why these traditions may or may not continue to be important.

 

B.        Why is federalism so important to the past, present and future of American democracy? Be sure your answer reflects your knowledge of the reason why America has a federal political system as well as how the federal system works today.
