What you need to do before enrolling at IPFW

Step 1: Pay the SEVIS Fee

  • School code: CHI214F10460001
  • To begin the entry process, you must pay the $200 SEVIS fee to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) BEFORE entering the United States to begin your studies.  You can use the SEVIS identification number and IPFW's school code given above.  If at all possible, we encourage you to pay the SEVIS fee online.  
    In order to learn more about payment of the SEVIS fee, please click here. Once you have received your I-20, you can apply for a Visa.

   

Step 2: Obtain a Visa

Documents required at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate at your home country to apply for the F-1 Student Visa:

  1. Valid Passport (for at least 6 months into the future)
  2. Original letter of acceptance/admission from IPFW
  3. Valid SEVIS I-20 form issued by IPFW and SEVIS receipt of payment
  4. Original copies of all financial documents (such as bank statement(s))
  5. Proof of ties to your home country (job, ownership of a property, etc.)
  6. Copies of all transcripts
  7. Copies of the TOEFL or IELTS, SAT, ACT, etc.

Step 3: Confirm Enrollment and Provide Arrival Date

  • Ready to commit?  Use the intent to enroll form AND the arrival form to confirm your enrollment at IPFW and provide information about when you are arriving in Fort Wayne.
  • Transportation from the Fort Wayne Airport (FWA) to the IPFW campus may be reserved at least 2 weeks in advance and is only available August 7th through the 13th.  
  • Students arriving before or after these dates should plan to take a taxi. The taxi stand at FWA is located outside of the baggage claim exit doors.

Step 4: Set Up MYipfw

  • We encourage you to take the next step in becoming a student by activating your myIPFW email account. Please activate your email account immediately. Go to my.ipfw.edu, click on “First Time User”, and follow the directions to activate your network email account and set your password. This will become your primary source of communication with the university for registration billing, and other important university announcements. 

   

Step 5: Arrange Housing

  • Students can live in IPFW Student Housing during the traditional academic year (fall and spring semester/10 months) or for a full year (fall, spring, and summer semesters/12 months). The type of apartment and length of stay you choose determine the cost.
  • Students planning to enter Student Housing are encouraged to apply for a space as early as possible. Students who want to live in Student Housing during fall semester should apply before May 1st.  Students wanting to live in Student Housing during spring semester should apply by November 1.
  • Please note that the official arrival date for IPFW Student Housing in August 16th.  International students who are required to arrive early for New International Student Orientation are permitted to apply to arrive early but must pay a small nightly rate.  Please arrange this with Housing by July 31.

  • All forms for housing including application, lease, room-mate request form, agreements, and early move-in forms must be turned into housing@ipfw.edu by July 31.  

   

Step 6: Orientation

  • The Office of International Education provides mandatory orientation session for all new international students at the start of every fall and spring semester. This orientation is for both undergraduate and graduate students.

  • New undergraduate students should arrive by August 8th or 9th and check into the Office of International Education on the morning of August 9th. 
  • Transfer, Exchange, and Graduate Students should plan to arrive on the 12th or 13th and check in with the Office of International Education on the morning of Monday August 14th.  
  • New International Student Orientation will run from every day from 8/9-8/11 for beginner students and then every day from 8/14 to 8/18 for all students including beginner students. 

   

Step 7: Register for Classes

  • Students will take mandatory placement tests and register for classes upon arrival to campus. Academic Advisors will collaborate with the Office of International Education to ensure all students are registered. For future semester, see your academic advisor to assist with registration during your time at IPFW.
