Academic Student Achievement Program

Indiana University—Purdue University Fort Wayne places a high priority on student retention. In an effort to assist in the retention and academic success of students of color, including Perkins Grant and Summer Bridge students, the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs has initiated the Academic Student Achievement Program (ASAP!) .

The Mission

The mission is to provide an early warning system that identifies students in need of intervention on the part of faculty and advisor. This proactive measure ensures a higher rate of success for the student in the classroom, and in turn, fosters their successful progression through the university and completion of their degree program. Another objective is to enhance the relationships and communication between students and faculty.

Who is considered an ASAP! Candidate?

Each faculty member is asked to identify students who are experiencing difficulties that might lead to a failing grade in a course. Referrals may be made for, but not limited to, students earning a grade below a C and/or students who present symptoms as those described in the summary of Detection and Assistance Options for Students at Risk, in the 1996 report of the Early Warning Subcommittee of the IPFW Retention Committee. They are symptoms that may be useful in identifying students at risk and may be related to participation, behavior, and psychological factors including:

  • Poor attendance, non-participation; late arrival/early departure; failure to bring texts, pens, notebooks, etc., to class; sleeping in class; inappropriate questions and comments.
  • Body language indicating inattentiveness, poor attitude, or despair; poor schedule revealed in demographic questions on first-day survey; complications of minimal on-campus presence and travel distance.
  • Lack of confidence/low self-esteem; fear of failure, unrealistic goals; limited motivation; learned helplessness; external focus of control; no interest in intrinsic benefit of learning, perception of college as meaningless busywork required for a (meaningless) credential necessary for job advancement/acquisition.

ASAP! Highlights and Benefits

  • Increased contact and communication between students and faculty
  • Increased familiarity of campus resources and students
  • Proactive Academic Advising for Students
