Upward Bound

Upward Bound prepares you for successful entrance into a college or university. This college preparatory program is designed to assist you with the development of your academic skills and to provide the guidance for success beyond high school.

The Mission

  1. Provide academic skills instruction in math, science and language arts.
  2. Positively impact grade averages and test scores of students with special emphasis on math and Language Arts .
  3. Make available tutoring and academic counseling for all participants both on campus and in program schools.
  4. Assist participants with the preparation of college applications and financial aid forms.
  5. Instill a positive attitude and appreciation toward lifelong learning.
  6. Expose students to new academic, social, and cultural learning experiences.

To accomplish the objectives, students participate in two program components: a nine-month Academic Year Component, which supplements the traditional school year and a six week Summer Academy (which includes a residential stay).

Academic Year Component

From September through May, participants are provided support services that help to develop the total person while working to ensure academic progress and improvement. Services include:

  • After-school Tutoring
  • Academic Theme Saturdays
  • Individualized College Education Plan
  • College Visits
  • Cultural Experience

Summer Academy

During the summer, participants are offered the opportunity to live the college experience! For six weeks, students take academic classes on IPFW's campus and live in residential housing. Classes are offered in math, Language Arts, Spanish, Science, Cultural/societies, and history. Weekly trips and activities also take place. Along with expanding their knowledge base, the summer Academy allows Upward Bound students to gain a sense of independence, improve social interaction skills, and most importantly, lessen anxiety of the entire college experience.
