Undergraduate Degrees

Bachelor of Science
With a Major in Nursing

Admission Criteria/Requirements for the Bachelor of Science with a Major in Nursing**

Admission to the IPFW nursing program is limited and competitive.  Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be admitted to IPFW as a degree seeking student.
  • Complete 16 hours of pre-nursing curriculum with a grade of C- or better in each course. Courses may be repeated only one time and the most recent grade earned will be incorporated into the GPA calculations. The pre-nursing curriculum includes:
    • PSY 120
    • ENG W131
    • CHM 104 (CHM 111*)
    • BIOL 203
    • COM 114
  • Take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) scholastic aptitude assessment pre-admission examination. TEAS test scores (Reading, Math, Science, English and Total) are used for admission into the nursing program, in addition to the pre-nursing GPA. The examination is administered on specific dates and times. Applicants pay a testing fee.
  • Apply by the deadlines of May 1 for the fall semester and December 1 for the spring semester.
  • The grade point average (GPA) for application is calculated on only the 16 hours of pre-nursing curriculum taken at IPFW or at other Purdue University or Indiana University campuses.  Applicants are ranked based on their pre-nursing GPA.  A minimum pre-nursing GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is required to apply.  The minimum GPA does not guarantee admission; the actual GPA necessary for admission varies with the GPA of the applicant pool and the number of available seats for admission.  This GPA does not include transfer courses.  However, all transfer grades will be reviewed and evaluated in the admission process.
  • For the application, a student who had earned a grade below C- in any nursing curriculum course will be ineligible for admission into the nursing program unless the course has been retaken with a grade of C- or higher.
  • Credits in biology, nursing, and pharmacology courses must be earned within 5 years of admission to the nursing program.  Credits in chemistry and food & nutrition must be earned within 10 years of admission to the nursing program.
  • First priority consideration for program admission will be given to students who have completed 9 or more of the 16 pre-nursing curriculum hours at IPFW or at other Purdue University or Indiana University campuses. Three credit hours of a required science must be taken at a Purdue University or Indiana University campus for admission consideration.
  • If additional seats are available, the second priority is given to students who have completed less than 9 of the 16 pre-nursing curriculum hours at IPFW or at other Purdue University of Indiana University campuses. Three credit hours of a required science must be taken at a Purdue University or Indiana University campus for admission consideration.
  • If additional seats are available, the third priority is given to students who have none of the 16 pre-nursing curriculum hours at IPFW or at other Purdue University or Indiana University campuses. In this case, the transfer GPA of the pre-nursing curriculum will be used for admission.
  • Students are admitted for a specific semester and are expected to enter that semester. Students who do not enter that semester must reapply for competitive program admission. Students who decline admission two times will no longer be considered.
  • Students must accept or decline admission by returning the IPFW program admission form by the defined deadlines.
  • Students who have not been accepted, but who are qualified, may reapply for admission.

*CHM 111 & 112 Equivalent to CHM 104

Criteria for Dismissal from Pre-Nursing / Ineligibility for Admission to Nursing

  • Per Dept. of Nursing policy, if a student earns two grades below C- in the same or any combination of two courses required in the nursing curriculum (taken at IPFW or previous university/college), the student will be dismissed from the nursing program.  A student who had earned the second grade below C- will be ineligible for admission into the nursing program for a period of five years from the date of dismissal.  Know that, even if a course with a D or F is retaken, that original D or F still counts as one of the grades below C-.

**Beginning with the application process of December 1, 2010 deadline, the pre-nursing curriculum will include the following 33 credit hours:

  • BIOL 220 – Microbiology for Health Professionals (4 credit hours)

  • First priority consideration for program admission will be given to students who have completed 19 or more of the 33 pre-nursing curriculum hours at IPFW or at other Purdue University or Indiana University campuses.  Six credit hours of a required science must be taken at a Purdue University or Indiana University campus for admission consideration.
  • If additional seats are available, the second priority is given to students who have completed less than 19 of the 33 pre-nursing curriculum hours at IPFW or at other Purdue University or Indiana University campuses.  Six credit hours of a required science must be taken at a Purdue University or Indiana University campus for admission purposes.
  • If additional seats are available, the third priority is given to students who have none of the 33 pre-nursing curriculum hours at IPFW or at other Purdue University or Indiana University campuses.  In this case, the transfer GPA of the pre-nursing curriculum will be used for admission.
