Graduate Teaching Assistants
What is a graduate teaching assistantship?
Nursing typically offers several graduate teaching assistantships per semester. This appointment includes a stipend for teaching a clinical or teaching in the lab as well as fee remission for that semester.
What course does a graduate teaching assistant teach?
The graduate teaching assistant teaches clinicals or in the skills lab, running simulations, conducting check-offs, and tutoring.
How much does a graduate teaching assistant earn?
The 2008-2009 stipend is $6,370 per academic year for a .25 FTE or $12,740 for a .50 FTE. A .25 FTE in the lab is a 10 hour a week schedule for 16 weeks. A .25 FTE teaching clinical is a 4.5 - 5 hours that translates to equal 3 credit hours.

What is the tuition rate for a graduate teaching assistant?
Students receiving an assistantship also receive a substantial tuition reduction benefit. However, they must pay student fees each semester, plus a nominal fee per credit hour. Students not receiving an assistantship must pay the student fees, plus the normal tuition rate per credit hour. Rates depend on whether or not the student is an Indiana resident. Current fee and tuition rates can be found on IPFW's financial page.
IPFW Human Resources Tuition Benefits
Graduate assistantships will be awarded to the most qualified applicants based on the number of openings available. Graduate assistants usually teach a clinical or work 10-20 hours in the simulation/skills lab and take two classes; they receive a tuition reduction and stipend. IPFW requires that any student with a graduate assistantship maintain enrollment in a minimum of two (2) graduate level courses per semester.
Application Process
There are limited numbers of Graduate Assistantships awarded each year. Graduate Assistants are appointed by the Dean of the College of Health and Human Services in consultations with the Chair of the Department of Nursing.
All students applying for the Graduate Assistantship must meet with the Director of the Graduate program to discuss their plan of study prior to applying for the assistantship. In addition to completing the application form, the following information is needed when applying for the Graduate Assistant position:
- A copy of the letter admitting you to the Purdue Graduate School or the Graduate School that you are attending
- A current copy of your graduate transcripts
- A copy of the graduate classes that you have enrolled in for the semester
Decisions will be based on all graduate school application materials including transcripts, letters of recommendation, and statement of purpose. The Directors of the Simulation and Research, Graduate Program, and Department Chair will interview the graduate students. Only students who are admitted to the program without condition, or who have conditions that have already been met are considered eligible for graduate assistantships.
Students who do not receive assistantships are welcome to reapply in subsequent semesters by contacting the department chair in writing.
Keeping Your Assistantship
Graduate assistantships are not guaranteed positions. Maintaining assistantships requires maintaining acceptable academic performance. This requires that graduate assistants:
- Maintain enrollment in two (2) graduate level courses per semester
- Achieve no more than one (1) grade of C in their coursework while in the program
- Engage in acceptable performance in their teaching duites
- Attend all required workshops and other professional development activities as requested by the Director of Simulation and Research
- Receive acceptable evaluations (from students and supervisor)
