FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) today awarded several employees commendations for their actions in helping save the life of a fellow campus employee. Police Officer Grant Cowan received the American Red Cross Lifesaving Team Award for the Professional Responder; Heather Krull and Julie Miller also received civilian commendations for their life-saving actions in helping save the life of Physical Plant employee Dan Hyde.
This past May, Hyde was working in Walb Student Union on campus when he suffered a heart attack. Employees Leanne Hand and Miller from Special Events were on scene and Hand called 9-1-1 while Miller began CPR on Hyde. Kaye Pitcher from Engineering, along with graduate student Dustin Hershberger, also aided in getting help. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene. Krull, a nurse practitioner from the Center for Healthy Living on campus, along with Officer Grant Cowan, continued CPR efforts and employed the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED).
“I’m so proud of all the life-saving efforts by our employees,” said Interim Police Chief Tony Colone. “They acted calmly and as a team to come to Dan’s assistance.” After administering the initial shock, the Fort Wayne Fire Department arrived on scene and transported Hyde to a local hospital, where he recovered.
Hyde was on hand this morning when Officer Cowan, Krull, and Miller were presented with the commendations and all employees, including Pitcher and Hand, received the Distinguished Ripples Award from Human Resources.
Hyde told the group, “I wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t been there. This is very emotional for me. I appreciate it very much; thank you for saving my life.”
In an effort to train more employees in life-saving techniques the Center for Healthy Living will be offering a CPR/AED training class starting Saturday, September 14, 8 am- noon in Walb Student Union, Room 114. There are four sessions in the series. The cost is $50 ($25 for IPFW employees and their spouses) and is open to the public. Call Judy Tillapaugh at 260-481-6647 for additional information.
