FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Melissa Kurten has been named as director of training outreach for the Division of Continuing Studies (DCS) at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). The announcement recently was made by Karen VanGorder, DCS executive director. Training Outreach is a merger of two previous DCS departments, Personal and Professional Development and Entrepreneurship and Corporate Training.
Kurten has years of experience in developing and implementing customer service-based training programs in the corporate setting. For the past eight years, she was corporate training and development coordinator for Roto-Rooter Services Company, serving both remotely and on location at 70 Roto-Rooter locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. She developed and provided onsite training for software and office operations as well as customer service training for the entire contractor group.
In introducing Kurten to the Division of Continuing Studies staff, VanGorder highlighted all of her experience in training and sales. “Melissa has a strong work ethic and is goal driven,” she added. “I look forward to watching the Training Outreach team members excel under her leadership.”

In addition to her experience in corporate training, Kurten has worked in managerial, admissions, and recruitment positions for a variety of organizations, including Sylvan Learning Center in Bloomington and Indiana Business College (now known as Harrison College) and Renhill Staffing Services in Fort Wayne. She is proficient in project management and a variety of software programs, in addition to corporate training and development

Kurten also is active in the local community, serving as volunteer event coordinator and media liaison for the Historic Oakdale Neighborhood Association and as an event volunteer for the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory. She is a graduate of Hanover College in Hanover, Ind., where she earned a Bachelor of Arts with a major in psychology.
