FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Organizers are halfway to their goal of getting 1,000 volunteers to take part in the third annual BIG Event at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Around 500 IPFW students, staff, faculty, administrators, and alumni have registered to volunteer at The BIG Event, which is billed as one BIG day of service to say thank you from IPFW to the community.
So far, 53 not-for-profit agencies are on board to have teams of volunteers help them out from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry will welcome the volunteers to IPFW's campus on March 29 to thank them for their great community work.
Krissy Creager, director of student life and coordinator of The BIG Event, says participating agencies are looking for help in all manner of tasks, from “painting, landscaping, minor repairs, office work such as stuffing envelopes for mailings, filing, cleaning, working with animals; there’s something for everyone.” Creager added that volunteers can register by themselves or get friends or coworkers together and register as a group.
Volunteers who are interested in taking part in The BIG Event can register online at The BIG Event website through March 21 at 5 p.m.; however, walk-in volunteers will be allowed on the day of the event. Volunteers will meet in the Athletics Fieldhouse at IPFW on 9 a.m. Saturday, March 29, where they will receive their assignments and be transported to and from their job sites. A victory party will take place in the Fieldhouse when the teams return from their job sites at approximately 2 p.m.
This year The BIG Event was the recipient of a $700 grant from Indiana Campus Compact. The BIG Event is sponsored by Platinum Sponsors: Indiana-Purdue Student Government Association, IPFW Chancellor's Council on Diversity, Office of Student Life; Silver Sponsors: Big Apple Bagels, Indiana Campus Compact, Coliseum Park, Walmart; and Blue Sponsors: Mizpah Shriners - Fort Wayne, LSR Activewear, and Fort Wayne Community Schools.
