IPFW Program Recognized at National Conference

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—How does a university really know how its freshmen students are doing and how it can help them be successful and stay in school? One way is with programs that can identify students at risk early in their academic careers and offer opportunities that will help them succeed. One of those programs highly regarded by colleges and university is EBI MAP-Works, which is “dedicated to improving retention, student success, and the quality of the college student experience.”

Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) was recognized at the recent national conference for MAP-Works, where university representatives were presented with the Excellence Award for Cross Campus Collaborations.

Jennifer Oxtoby, coordinator of the MAP-Works program, says IPFW received the award because of the increase in the number of “direct connects” taking part in the program. “Collaborating across the university produces immediate benefits to students … enhanced communication between faculty and staff about students, referrals to needed support resources (such as the Tutoring Center), and ultimately, increased graduation rates," said Oxtoby.

Greg Anderson, associate director of the First Year Experience (FYE), which includes the MAP-Works program, said at IPFW all freshmen students are invited to take the MAP-Works survey in the third and eighth weeks of the semester. “In taking the survey, the students agree to share the results with their faculty, advisors, and other staff they are involved with, who are called ‘direct connects’ to the students.” Some of the questions the students respond to include:

  • their commitment to completing a degree and whether that degree will be completed at IPFW
  • how satisfied they are with their campus social experiences
  • how confident they are in their study skills and habits
  • rating their overall experience at IPFW

From the students’ responses to those and other questions, the direct connects can determine the best way to help each student achieve success in their academic careers.
