FORT WAYNE, Ind.—The Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) presents Steven A. Benner as part of the Distinguished Lecturer Series. Benner's lecture, titled "Synthesizing Life," will take place Friday, November 1, at 4 p.m. in the Walb International Ballroom. Immediately following the lecture, there will be a reception with a cash bar.

The lecture will explain how, as their ultimate goal, synthetic biologists are working to create a synthetic life from the bottom up. Benner will touch on the intimate connection between chemical reactivity and the living state. Benner will share his latest results in creating artificial genetic systems, elaborating on the organic chemistry that has delivered non-standard DNA-like molecules that support replication, adaption, and evolution. Benner is a Distinguished Fellow in the Westheimer Institute at the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution, which he founded after serving on the faculty of Harvard University, the ETH in Zurich, and the University of Florida. His research has contributed to many areas in the physical sciences, informatics, natural history, and planetary science.

This lecture is presented by the College of Arts and Sciences in collaboration with the chemistry department, sponsored in part by the Addison Locke Roache Memorial Lecture Fund.
