IPFW Holds First-Generation Birthday Celebration

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne’s (IPFW) TRIO Student Support Services is holding a special first-generation birthday celebration on Wednesday, November 8, at noon, in Gates Sports Center.

The campus-wide event will recognize all first-generation students, faculty, and staff for being the first in their families to earn college degrees. It is part of a national first-generation college celebration to commemorate the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act, which has helped millions of low-income students become the first in their families to earn college degrees.

“Offering services and bringing awareness of first-generation issues is especially important here since half of our students are first-generation,” said Shubitha Kever, director of TRIO Student Support Services. “We work hard to make sure everyone has access to higher education, no matter their background or economic circumstances.”

The event is open to everyone on campus. All first-generation students, faculty, and staff will receive special stickers and take part in a large group photo. Birthday cake will also be served.
