FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Donald Linn, professor of chemistry at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) has been published in the Royal Society of Chemistry publication, Dalton Transactions, with his research article titled "The Novel Hydrogen-Rich Binuclear Cobalt Complex Anion." Linn coauthored the article with IPFW alumnus Jerod Kieser and Jason Shearer, a researcher working at the University of Nevada, Reno. The article was first published January 3, 2014.
According to Kieser, "The best part of making a new molecule is finding out how to improve the process and what can be done with it. Throughout my time with Dr. Linn, we tried numerous ideas regarding both production and application before finalizing the current publication. Looking back, all of the classroom work and lab courses certainly provided me with valuable tools, but performing research work is what actually prepared me for my future."
Article abstract: "Hydrogen reacts with a mixture of cobalt bromide and phenylmagnesium bromide to yield a novel cobalt hydride species. EXAFS analysis reveals a binuclear cobalt hydride complex comprising three absorbers, principally a Co–Co centre, and also two types of supporting hydride ligands. Further, DFT, XANES, 1H NMR spectra and elemental analyses also support the title formulation."
