Nine Cadets Commissioned at IPFW ROTC Ceremony

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) held the 2017 Spring Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) Commissioning and Awards Ceremony this evening in Walb Classic Ballroom.

Nine cadets were commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants, with one going to the Reserves and eight going to the National Guard.

"I am very proud of our newly commissioned 2nd Lieutenants and all of our cadets in the program,” said Captain Steven Hagemeyer, assistant professor of military science. "The support for our program and the military at IPFW is phenomenal." More than 100 people came out to support IPFW's Corps of Cadets, including Chancellor Vicky Carwein, who offered remarks and words of encouragement to the attendees.

Speaking at the ceremony was Lieutenant Colonel Jeremy Gulley, Battalion Commander of the 1st Battalion, 293rd Infantry Regiment, Indiana Army National Guard. He is the Superintendent of the Jay School Corporation and has been a principal at Jay County High School and Huntington North High School.

A number of awards were also handed out to cadets who displayed outstanding physical, academic, and leadership skills through service, honor, courage, and patriotism.

  • Distinguished Military Science Cadet, MS I: Anthony R. Guzman
  • Distinguished Military Science Cadet, MS II: Andrew J. Hurst
  • Distinguished Military Science Cadet, MS III: Jason Anderson
  • Mastodon Award of Excellence Cavalry Saber: Rachel R. Beery
