IPFW Graphic Arts Professor Advises World Council in China
(Fort Wayne, October 30, 2009) -- The International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRADA) is the world body for professional visual communication design practice, promotion, and education. It is constituted of member associations, corporate bodies, and educational institutions on a global scale. It holds consultative status with the United Nations and the Council of Europe, and is a partner of the International Design Alliance (IDA). ICOGRADA is governed by an executive board and is currently headquartered in Canada.
31 years ago, Haig David-West, chair and professor of the Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne department of visual communication and design, was co-opted into the ICOGRADA executive board and subsequently elected to the office of vice president, serving two consecutive terms, with the portfolio of regional coordinator for Africa. In that capacity he represented ICOGRADA at the United Nations conference on communication policies in Africa, organized the first ICOGRADA Africa regional meeting in Nigeria, and initiated the Port Harcourt Protocol.
ICOGRADA convenes a general assembly every two years in various parts of the world where all of its previous executive board members, presidents, and vice presidents are invited as observers, bringing a sense of history to proceedings at the general assembly. It is in this context that Haig David-West is in Beijing, China, until Nov. 4, 2009.
In his general comments yesterday at the assembly, David-West recalled the board's initiative to engage China at the Helsinki meeting 27 years ago and applauded the hosting of the first-ever general assembly in Beijing in 2009 as a powerful realization of that initiative. He also lent his voice of support to a call by Treasury candidate David Berman (Canada) for the hope of a Nobel Prize in Design. While in China, he is also exploring avenues for international exposure and cross-cultural engagement for IPFW visual communication and design students.
For immediate information, David-West is available by e-mail at davidh@ipfw.edu, or contact Susan Domer in the department of visual and performing arts at 260-481-6025 or domers@ipfw.edu. After November 4, David-West can be reached at 260-481-6053.
