IPFW Omnibus Speaker: Conservative Soul

(Fort Wayne, October 30, 2009) -- Andrew Sullivan, blogger, journalist, commentator and “conservative soul,” will present “Friendship: The Forgotten Relationship” at the next Omnibus Lecture at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. No tickets are required for this free lecture. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Sullivan’s books will be on sale and he will be available for signing following the lecture.

Sullivan uses his columns, online blog, and frequent television appearances to question the present course of conservatism in America, arguing for the revival of a conservative tradition based on practical restraint, individual freedom, constitutional norms, and skepticism.

As senior editor and blogger at The Atlantic and as a columnist for the Sunday Times of London, Sullivan is one of today’s most provocative political and social commentators. His blog, The Daily Dish, is found on The Atlantic Web site, where his incisive and blunt observations about the news inspired Playboy to rank it no. 1 on its list of Top 10 Political Blogs in America.

In his latest book, The Conservative Soul: How We Lost It, How to Get It Back (2007), Sullivan makes an impassioned call to rescue conservatism from the excesses of the Republican Party’s far right, which risks making the GOP the first fundamentally religious party in U.S. history. In his landmark book Virtually Normal: An Argument About Homosexuality (1996), he was the first to advocate civil marriage rights for gay couples.

Sullivan is the former (and youngest-ever) editor-in-chief of The New Republic and has written extensively on a wide range of issues from the crisis in the Catholic Church to the war in Iraq, civil liberties, and torture.

He is British-born and a graduate of Oxford and Harvard universities. Sullivan, who was elected the youngest president of the Oxford Debating Union, is known for his sharp debating skills as a regular panelist on the syndicated Chris Matthews Show and HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher. He also makes appearances on many other programs including CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360°, NBC’s Meet The Press, and PBS’s Charlie Rose.

The IPFW Omnibus Lecture Series brings six distinguished speakers to the university and the northeast Indiana community each year. The series, in its 15th year, is committed to presenting diverse perspectives through educated, respected, and entertaining speakers. Omnibus is made possible with the support of the English, Bonter, Mitchell Foundation and publicized with support from Northeast Indiana Public Radio and WANE-TV NewsChannel 15. The Sullivan lecture is cosponsored by the AIDS Task Force of Northeast Indiana.

The 2009–10 Omnibus Lecture Series is held in The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center in the acoustically superb, 1,600-seat Auer Performance Hall. The music center is located on the north end of campus in the arts plaza next to Williams Theatre and the Visual Arts Building.
