Nicolás Valdez Performance Rescheduled for November 19
(Fort Wayne, October 28, 2009) -- Self-proclaimed cultural activist Nicolás Ramiro Valdez will lead the PochoLandia: Border Tales of a Nuevo-Indigeno-Xicano-Gitano" workshop/performance at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). The workshop/performance, part of IPFWs Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, had originally been scheduled for October 14 but was postponed. The event has been rescheduled for Thursday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. in the Walb Student Union Ballroom. It is free and open to the public.
Valdez will facilitate an hour-long workshop/performance consisting of poetry, music and teatro including a question and answer session. The session is sponsored by IPFWs Hispanos Unidos and the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.
Valdez, born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, began studying traditional Conjunto accordion at age 9. By 13, he was involved in writing, producing, and performing original theatrical work through cultural arts organizations. Since then he has performed nationally and has shared the stage with Sandra Cisneros, Maya Angelou, Jesse Borrego, Luis Valdez, Guillermo Gomez-Peña, and others. His artistic work reflects the dualistic identities of the communities around the U.S./Mexico border. Through music, poetry, and teatro, Nicolas weaves a vivid and personal story that engages audiences in a process of critical thinking.
