Hamilton Sisters Statue to be Rededicated Society of Hamilton Sisters to take part
(Fort Wayne, October 21, 2009) -- The statue of Edith and Alice Hamilton and their first cousin Alice, known as the Hamilton Sisters, will be rededicated Sunday, Oct. 25, from 2 to 3 p.m. in Headwaters Park in downtown Fort Wayne. The statue was given to the city as an historic gift of the Millennium Celebration in 2000 to commemorate the work of the three women.
Edith, Alice, and Agnes Hamilton were remarkable women, not only for the times in which they lived, but for any time. Edith gained fame as an educator and writer; her sister Alice was the first female professor in Harvard University’s medical school and is considered the founder of OSHA; and first cousin Agnes helped indigent women and children in Fort Wayne by founding the local YWCA, opening the first library, and helping found the Bethany Presbyterian Church.
To further immortalize these women, in 2005 retired educator Patty Martone and Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) collaborated to form the Society of Hamilton Sisters. The Society reflects the achievements, service contributions, and outstanding accomplishments of middle and high school girls. One of the Society members, Kelsey Quigley, a Snider High School graduate and now a sophomore at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., will be the featured speaker at the rededication of the statue. Other speakers include John Steven Park, Martone, Lorraine Davis, and singers from North Side High School.
For more information on the rededication, contact Martone at 260-484-2233.
