IPFW Library Dean Helps Bring Conference to Fort Wayne

(Fort Wayne, October 15, 2009) -- Approximately 1,000 librarians are expected to convene at the Grand Wayne Center beginning this Sunday, October 18, for the 2009 Indiana Libraries Federation (ILF) Annual conference. Why are they traveling from all corners of the state to Fort Wayne, boosting the local economy? The convergence is due in part to the efforts of Cheryl Truesdell, dean of the Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Walter E. Helmke Library and president of the ILF, who strongly advocated the move from Indianapolis to Fort Wayne.

“We evaluated several categories when deciding where to hold the 2009 ILF conference,” said Truesdell. “Fort Wayne came out on top in all categories. Although there was still a strong push to keep the Conference in Indianapolis due to its convenient location to members from all parts of the state, I strongly advocated for Fort Wayne and the ILF Executive Board voted to change the venue for 2009.”

Truesdell said ILF, which is the professional organization for librarians, media specialists, public library trustees, library staff, and other library supporters, is the largest organization for librarians in the state with more than 3,000 members. The Federation hosts an annual conference, which provides continuing education, networking, and a forum for exchange of ideas.

“We have more than 150 programs planned this year with two keynote speakers for the two-day conference,” said Truesdell. “The Conference usually draws 1,000-1,200 members and nonmembers.”
