First IPFW Class at Holiday Inn Success
(Fort Wayne, May 20, 2009) -- Spring semester marked the first time Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) hospitality management students had the opportunity to use the new facilities at the Holiday Inn at IPFW and the Coliseum for one of their capstone management classes.
Taught by John Niser, chair of the IPFW Department of Consumer and Family Sciences, students in the Advanced Foods Service Management class completed five weeks of classroom learning followed by ten weeks of effectively managing the hotel’s restaurant, the Mastodon Grill. They planned themed evenings, called “Truly Mediterranean Tuesdays,” after completing regional market research and a business plan. The students then marketed and managed the evening, attracting around 500 guests.
Fifty percent of each student’s grade was based on a class grade, encouraging students to develop a management style and operational procedures while working as a team, just as it will be in their future profession. “The learning experience is reported by students to be one of the best they had in IPFW,” said Niser.
