Tapestry Parkview Scholarships Change Asset Allocations
(Fort Wayne, June 3, 2009) -- More than $210,000 has been raised over the past seven years by Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and Parkview Health at Tapestry: A Day for Women. Proceeds raised support the Tapestry Parkview Endowment Fund and provide IPFW scholarships to select women in the field of health sciences.
At a news conference this morning, officials from IPFW and Parkview announced $70,000 was raised at Tapestry: A Day for Women in April. It was also announced that in an effort to more positively impact women students today as well as in the future, the asset distribution from Tapestry has changed. Proceeds from Tapestry will be distributed in a 50/50 split between the Tapestry Parkview Endowment and a gift account for scholarship distribution at next year’s Tapestry event. This differs from previous years where all proceeds were deposited into the endowment fund with the intention that interest generated on the fund would be sufficient to provide scholarships each year at Tapestry. Since endowment funds in general are not earning the interest they used to, the policy has changed. IPFW and Parkview recognize that the need for scholarships such as this is greater now than ever. Changing to the 50/50 split will benefit students today as well as tomorrow.
Ruth Stone, Tapestry Project Manager said, “In simple terms, it means that for every net dollar raised, 50 cents will go to the endowment for future scholarships and 50 cents will go toward scholarships to students studying today.” Denise Thieme is one of the two scholarship recipients announced in April. “The Tapestry Scholarship will provide me the opportunity to attend another full year at IPFW, leaving me just one semester from graduation. I look forward to the completion of my baccalaureate degree as it will open many doors in the nursing profession for me.” Amanda Operschall, the second recipient in 2009, commented that, “Education has always been one of the top priorities in our family. Ever since my father's sudden death last year, college tuition has been compromised due to the loss of our breadwinner's salary. Therefore, the 2009 Tapestry Scholarship has been such a blessing and I am so grateful for all who have contributed to help me pursue my dream to become a nurse practitioner.”
