IPFW Introduces New Academic Affairs Appointees

(Fort Wayne, July 1, 2009) -- Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) formally introduced two new appointments in the office of Academic Affairs at a news conference this morning (July 1, 2009).

Carl N. Drummond was introduced as the new Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the largest of the schools and colleges that make up IPFW. It includes 15 academic departments and 10 additional programs. McKinney said, “At the conclusion of a highly competitive national search, it was very clear that Carl rose to the top. I am thrilled to welcome him in his new capacity, and look forward to his vision and leadership in the College of Arts and Sciences.” Drummond said, “I am honored to have this opportunity to serve IPFW in a new capacity. It is my goal to position the College of Arts and Sciences in the center of the Fort Wayne region's cultural and intellectual life.” Drummond has served as associate vice chancellor for research and external support (ORES) at IPFW since 2002. He received a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Michigan in 1994 and has been a member of the IPFW faculty since that time.

McKinney then introduced J Albayyari as the new Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and External Support, replacing Drummond. McKinney announced Albayyari’s appointment today, saying “This was a very competitive search and J’s experience and credentials stood out. I have full faith and confidence in his ability to help lead IPFW forward and to build on Carl Drummond’s considerable success in that position.” In fiscal year 2008-09, ORES received 233 grant applications, 162 of which were funded. Total grant monies coming in to the office for the same time period was $4.6 million. Albayyari said he was “honored to have this opportunity to serve IPFW in a new capacity. It is my goal to establish a research rich environment at IPFW.” Albayyari served as associate dean of the Engineering Technology Division in IPFW’s College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science (ETCS) since 2007 and as the chair of the Manufacturing and Construction Engineering Technology & Interior Design Department (MCET) since 2006. He received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1995 and worked at Northern Kentucky University and Eastern Michigan University before joining IPFW in 2006. Albayyari was awarded a research grant from the NASA In-Space Technology Experiment (IN-STEP) in October 1993. His experiment was flown aboard the Space Shuttle in May 1996. Albayyari has also worked with IPFW faculty and students and secured several funded industrial projects, NASA student scholarships, and internship and faculty grants.
