Read All About It: IPFW Presents Posters on Reading at Midwestern Conference

(Fort Wayne, May 14, 2008) -- They say reading is the key to success, and several Indiana University—Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) students can attest to it. Four students and Assistant Professor of Psychology Michelle Drouin co-authored and presented posters that focused on reading at the Midwestern Psychological Association's (MPA) Annual Conference. Six students in all traveled to the conference in Chicago earlier this month.

Karrie Fredrickson, Jenna Harmon, Dana Harter, Elise Minick, Anthony Price, and Latoda Pope attended the conference for the largest psychological association in the world. The primary function of the MPA is to conduct an annual meeting where scientific papers and symposia may be presented. Harmon, Pope, and Harter created a poster titled, "Are Preschool Reading Attitudes Related to Vocabulary or Letter Knowledge?" Harter and Price created a poster titled, "Is Reading Fluency a Key to Academic Success in College?"

"For all the students who attended, it was their first time at the MPA, and for many of them, their first time in Chicago!" said Drouin. "Not surprisingly, they learned a lot and had great fun exploring the big city."

The students had served as research assistants for Drouin. Each of these student co-authors were supported via travel money from the Department of Psychology, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Office of Research and External Support.
