Going Green in the City for 14 IPFW Students

(Fort Wayne, May 7, 2008) -- Next to Kermit the Frog, Kevin Danaher is one of the greenest guys around. That's why the Indiana University—Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Sociology Student Association (SSA) invited the Global Exchange co-founder and Green Festival executive producer to IPFW last fall to share his knowledge of all things green. A simple campus lecture has led to an exciting, educational, and environmentally friendly opportunity for the SSA and IPFW.

Danaher was so impressed by the students' desire to improve the campus and the community with green initiatives that he invited them, and is sponsoring their admission, to the 2008 Green Festival in Chicago. The group will leave May 16 for the May 17 and 18 festival with the hope of bringing back knowledge to develop a Green Day at IPFW in October 2008 as well as other programming.

The two-day festival comes complete with more than 350 exhibitors and community action organizations, approximately 80 speakers including Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, a music stage with local acts, film festival, access to natural dining, green kids' zone, and tea garden.

"Were excited about this opportunity to learn and network with green resources in a major metropolitan area like Chicago," said Janelle Nannini, SSA president. "And we're eager to bring our knowledge back to educate other IPFW students and help Fort Wayne with its current progress."

The travel and lodging for the trip will be sponsored by the Indiana-Purdue Student Government Association (IPSGA), Office of Research and External Support (ORES), Student Affairs, and Student Life. The students also raised money for meals by selling Fair Trade Chocolates.
