IPFW to Honor Women in the Military
(Fort Wayne, March 19, 2008) -- There were plenty of heroes, but no hero welcomes for Vietnam veterans. Nearly twenty years later on the day the Vietnam Memorial was dedicated in 1993, only one sign read, "Welcome Home, Women - Thanks."
To help show more appreciation to women who served in the military, Indiana University—Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) will host a special showing of Vietnam Nurses with Dana Delaney Tues., April 1, at 6 p.m. in the Science Building, Room 168. The showing was originally scheduled for March 25. A reception honoring those who served will follow. Both are free and open to the public. Seating is limited and reservations are suggested. Contact 260-481-6711 or curtism@ipfw.edu for reservations.
Linda Finke, professor and dean of the College of Health and Human Services, served as a consultant for Vietnam Nurses, which won an Emmy award in October 2007 for Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft: Editing. The film tells the story of eight women's life-altering experiences as nurses in Vietnam.
"More than 7,500 women served as nurses in Vietnam and were exposed to things for which they had never prepared," said Finke. "Theirs is a story that needed to be told."
The event is sponsored by IPFW Women's Studies, Department of History, and the College of Health and Human Services and is part of Women's History Month.
