IPFW to Test Emergency Notification System

(Fort Wayne, March 14, 2008) -- Indiana University—Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) will test its Reverse 9-1-1 emergency notification system between March 17 and 31, 2008, on all of its campus land-line telephones and through all its @ipfw.edu e-mail addresses. Student housing residents, staff, and faculty will receive both voice and e-mail notifications that a test is being conducted. Nonresidential students will only receive e-mail notifications.

IPFW purchased the Reverse 9-1-1 system last fall in response to concerns over incidences of campus violence at other universities. "We were concerned that if IPFW suffered an incident similar to those at Virginia Tech or Northern Illinois University we wouldn't be able to warn our students, staff, and faculty. With the installation of the Reverse 9-1-1 system, we can send out notices of weather problems or other activities that may affect the safety of people on campus," said IPFW Chancellor Michael A. Wartell.

Wartell said in the near future the university will collect "Alert Phone Numbers" or APNs from students, faculty, and staff so they can be notified of campus emergencies when they are away from their campus offices, classrooms, or student housing. The collection of APNs will be done via a secure, online system.

For more information, contact Chancellor Wartell at 260-481-6103 or Lauren Denahrtog, chief of university police and safety, at 260-481-6827 or denharto@ipfw.edu.
