IPFW Session Studies Race Theory

(Fort Wayne, Jan. 17, 2008) -- What is critical race theory and why is it important? These questions and more will be addressed in a Black History Month Session at Indiana University—Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). Lisa Merriweather Hunn, assistant professor of adult, higher, and community education at Ball State University, will discuss race theory Thursday, Jan. 24, from noon to 1 p.m. in Walb Student Union, Room G21. The session is free and open to the public.

The thought-provoking and interactive discussion will focus on what critical race theory (CRT) is; who the key critical race theorists are; why CRT is important and/or relevant as a theoretical framework for academic researchers, educators, social justice advocates, and others; what CRT means to majority culture liberals and their approach to racism; and how CRT has been utilized in the academic, sociological, and political arenas.

Merriweather formed and coordinates the United Students of Color for Success at Ball State University. Her research interests include African-American Adult Education history, African-American adult learners, and Africentric Philosophical Theory. She has a special interest in redressing issues of equity and social justice, especially within the historical discourse of the field.
