IPFW First in Summit League to Hold Pink Out

(Fort Wayne, Jan. 17, 2008) -- IPFW Athletic Director Tommy Bell wants to see a sea of pink in the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Saturday, Feb. 2. That's when the inaugural IPFW Pink Out takes place. At a news conference this morning (Thursday, Feb. 17, 2008) Bell detailed how IPFW is the first member of the Summit League to take on this project. "Pink Out is an NCAA initiative in women's intercollegiate athletics to support breast cancer research and awareness programs. It's very hard for any of us to go through even one day without meeting with or talking to someone who hasn't been touched by breast cancer. We wanted to take the lead-off step in the Summit League's support of this initiative and show our support for those who have survived breast cancer. I think we've got a terrific opportunity to raise some money for two very good local agencies, and to show off IPFW's women's and men's basketball teams as they take on North Dakota State University," said Bell who also urged everyone at the news conference to wear pink to the games. A portion of each ticket sold will be equally divided between the American Cancer Society and Francine's Friends' Mobile Mammography Unit.

All breast cancer survivors who pre-register for the event will receive a free ticket to the doubleheader basketball game, a free Pink Out t-shirt, a reception in their honor before the game, recognition during halftime festivities of the women's game, and a Vera Bradley memento to mark the occasion. Survivors' guests will be able to buy tickets to the games for the discounted price of $5 each.

The event begins at noon with the private reception for the survivors, followed at 1 p.m. by the women's game. During that game's halftime presentation, all breast cancer survivors will be honored. At the conclusion of the women's game, all ticket holders are invited to stay for the men's game.

Corporate sponsors for IPFW's Pink Out include K & K Insurance, Lutheran Cancer Center, Swiss Re, Rainbow Furniture, Fred Toenges Shoes and Pedorthics, Time Services, Parkview Cancer Center, Sold by the Gold, and DeKalb Memorial Hospital.
