Independence for Kosovo: What Does it Mean?
(Fort Wayne, Feb. 19, 2008) -- The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Hashim Thaco, declared that nations independence from Serbia Sunday, Feb. 17, with these words: "The day has come. From this day onwards, Kosovo is proud, independent, and free."
What will that independence mean to the people who live there? To the countries who don't agree with it, as well as to the countries who do?
Indiana University—Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) will host a panel discussion Thursday, Feb. 21, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Walb Student Union, Rooms 224-226, to discuss those issues. Bernd Fischer, professor and chair of the history department, and James Toole, assistant professor of political science, both of whom are experts on Eastern Europe, will lead the discussion.
