Cholesterol: What You Know Makes a Difference

(Fort Wayne, August 13, 2008) -- Do you know what your cholesterol levels are? If you don't, you could be taking a very big health risk. The Indiana University—Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Northeast Indiana Area Health Education Center (NEI-AHEC) in collaboration with the Allen County Health Disparity Coalition's Prevention Clinic, is sponsoring a presentation, "Taking Control of Your Cholesterol," Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the NEI-AHEC Training Room in the Lafayette Medical Center, located at 2700 S. Lafayette Street, Suite 100.

Dr. Alane Haney-Russell, a retired physician and community health educator for the organization, Medical Education-Change Must Come, will discuss what cholesterol is; the differences between cholesterol and fat; what cholesterol can do; who needs to have their cholesterol checked; good versus bad cholesterol; and strategies for lowering your cholesterol.

Information will be provided about healthy eating and strategies to increase physical activity. The presentation is free and open to the public. After the presentation, the Prevention Clinic will provide free health screenings from 5 to 6:30 p.m. where cholesterol levels can be checked.

For more information and to RSVP, contact Aleshia Panbamrung, associate director, IPFW NEI-AHEC, at 260-744-1188 or panbamra@ipfw.edu.
