Middle School Career Day at IPFW: What is an Engineer?
(Fort Wayne, March 12, 2007) -- On Tuesday, March 20, the College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science at Indiana University—Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) will host 200 area middle school students and answer the question, What is an Engineer? This popular morning event is held in the Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science Building on the IPFW campus and as in the past, has filled up quickly. A second session, already filled, will also be offered on Tuesday, April 10.
The Middle School Career Day Program is structured to provide exposure to a wide variety of engineering and technology disciplines. During this morning event, the students will be divided into eight groups. Each group is rotated through various technical sessions in 15-20 minute intervals from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. These presentations are provided by faculty and/or students. Hands-on activities are available in some sessions and a study trip worksheet for students will be provided. Topics of past presentations have included demonstrations on astronomical imaging, surveying, bridge building, circuit design, Lego robots, an industrial pick and place robot, the wind tunnel, stress visualization, and engineering senior design.
A rotation schedule of sessions will be available in ETCS Building, Room 243. For a group photo of all 200 participants, go to Walb Student Union from 9:15 to 9:25 a.m. For more information, contact Carol Dostal, director of ETCS outreach, at dostalc@ipfw.edu or 260-481-6905.
