IPFW Welcomes Record Class of New Students

(Fort Wayne, August 30, 2007) -- IPFW welcomed its largest class ever of new students this year, with 1,180 coming directly from high school. This is an increase of 11.1 percent from last year's number of new high school graduates. When new adult students and other new students are also counted, 2,044 students began their studies at IPFW this fall.

Overall enrollment increased this fall to 11,943, an increase of 2.3 percent from last year and the third highest total enrollment in the history of IPFW. Full-time student enrollment also reached a record level of 7,407 students, an increase of 4.6 percent over last year's total.

Total credit hours increased 2.8 percent to a record total of 126,230. Credit hour totals are a measure of university teaching and are also used to calculate the university's state funding. IPFW enrollment numbers were released earlier today by Jack C. Dahl, associate vice chancellor for institutional research and planning.

Undergraduate student enrollment numbers showed little change. Sophomore and senior enrollments increased slightly, while freshman and junior enrollments were slightly below last year's levels. Graduate student enrollments increased by more than 6 percent, reflecting the addition of new master's programs and the re-design of the MBA program.

Minority student enrollments increased by 5 percent, with a total of 1,246 minority students enrolled. The numbers of Asian/Pacific Islander, African American, and Hispanic American students all increased, while the number of American Indian/Alaskan Native students declined by one student. International student enrollment increased by more than 12 percent.

Chancellor Michael Wartell commented that "We are very pleased with the continued growth in enrollment because it demonstrates that IPFW's programs are meeting the educational needs of northeast Indiana residents." Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs George McClellan noted that "IPFW student housing is full again this year, including the new Phase 2 buildings. It is clear that the university is offering an attractive mix of academic and student life programs."
