IPFW to Host Workshop About Depression Oct. 3

(Fort Wayne, Sept. 29, 2006) -- As part of Depression Awareness Month, IPFW will host “What Happy Faces are Hiding: Talking About Depression” Oct. 3 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Walb Student Union Ballroom. The free event, open to the community, will offer a personal story which frames mental health issues in real life language and examples that leave participants with a genuine understanding of a day in the life of a person living with a mental disorder.

Ross Szabo from CampuSpeak hopes to remove the stereotypes surrounding mental health issues. Szabo was diagnosed “bipolar with anger control problems and psychotic features” at age 16. He has waged a battle against mental health issues and related problems.

Szabo covers warning signs that can be seen in friends or family members as well as options and resources to turn to when a friend or loved one needs help. He stresses that people need to express what they are going through, know that they are not alone, and feel comfortable while seeking help.

The workshop is sponsored by IPFW Personal Counseling; IPFW/Parkview Health and Wellness Clinic; IPFW Department of Athletics, Recreation and Intramural Sports; IPFW Psi Chi; IPFW Student Government; IPFW Psychology Department; IPFW Sociology Department; IPFW Center for Women and Returning Adults; IPFW Circle K; and IPFW Campus Scouts.
