Voter Registration at IPFW Part of National Effort
(Fort Wayne, Sept. 29, 2006) -- The November 2006 mid-term elections are less than six weeks away and time is running short for those who are not yet registered to vote. Indiana University—Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) is taking part in a nation-wide effort to register 40,000 young voters in 30 states for the upcoming elections by holding two voter registration drives next month.
The first registration drive will be Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the university’s “spine,” just south of the overhead electronic sign between Neff Hall and Helmke Library. The spine is the north-south paved walkway which extends from the Engineering Building north to the Gates Center. The second drive will take place Oct. 10, which is the last day for voter registration. The time and location will be the same as the first drive.
Andrew Downs, director of the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics and IPFW’s American Democracy Project coordinator, says the drives are a project of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and are sponsored by America’s Renaissance and the Young Voters Strategic Project which is funded by a grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts. Downs says the goal for IPFW is to register 590 new voters. “We’re targeting first year students with an e-mail campaign, encouraging them and their friends, roommates and/or classmates to do the same.”
