IPFW holds Rape Aggression Defense class starting Sept. 18

(Fort Wayne, Sept. 7, 2006) -- IPFW Police and Safety will offer a Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) self-defense class Sept. 18 and 25 and Oct. 2 and 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. The female-only class is free to IPFW faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the spouses and dependent children of IPFW faculty and staff. Those not affiliated with IPFW pay $25 for the class.

R.A.D.’s instructional objective is “to develop and enhance the options of self defense so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked.”

R.A.D. teaches realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. The 12-hour class begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and risk avoidance before progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. Students are encouraged to participate in simulated attack situations on the last day of class. R.A.D. is the only program of its kind to offer a free lifetime return and practice policy.

Students who completed recent IPFW R.A.D. classes reported significant increases in confidence over nine scenarios, including being alone at work and home, in public places, and their ability to defend themselves if attacked. All IPFW R.A.D. students surveyed over a two-year period said they were more confident and empowered after taking the course and would recommend R.A.D. to their family and friends.

Another class will be held Nov. 4, 11, and 18 from 1 to 5 p.m.
