Hubble Space Telescope Expert Comes to IPFW
(Fort Wayne, March 31, 2006) -- Mark Voit, a world-renowned astronomer and astrophysicist, will present a lecture, “Dark Matters: Cosmology 2006,” Tuesday, April 11, at 4 p.m. at Indiana University—Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) in Walb Student Union, Room G-21. Voit is an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University (MSU) whose most recent research interests include the study of how the properties of galaxy clusters reflect the evolution of the universe.
Before joining MSU, Voit was an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STSI) in Maryland, where he was involved with the Hubble Heritage Project. In addition to research conducted at the institute, he specialized in introducing general audiences to the wonders of the universe as they were brought up close and personal by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). He was project scientist for the Smithsonian Institute’s traveling exhibit which highlighted images taken by HST, as well as the author of a companion book to the exhibit. According to web pages from the Hubble Heritage Project, Voit was the scientist behind NASA’s HubbleSite and also co-authored The Cosmic Perspective, a widely used, non-technical astronomy textbook.
Voit’s lecture is free and open to the public. After his lecture a
reception will be held in Walb Student Union’s Fireside Lounge featuring
hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.
The lecture is sponsored by Sigma Xi, and IPFW’s Departments of Anthropology
and Mathematics.
