IPFW Offers Entrepreneurship in the Arts Summer Courses

(Fort Wayne, April 19, 2006) -- IPFW Division of Continuing Studies is offering a six-course program over the summer that will allow students, alumni, and community artists to receive a Certificate in Entrepreneurship in the Arts. Courses in the program focus on business plans, market analysis, budgeting, accounting and legal issues, as well as management in artistic expression. Through these courses, artists will learn how to make a living through their art and link their artistic creativity with the powerful tools of business knowledge. Instruction will be provided by experts from the business community and successful art entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurship 101: Basic Business and Strategic Planning in the Arts is the introductory course to the certificate that teaches the basics of business. Topics will include starting a successful small business, feasibility studies with a focus on analysis of market potential, and business plan development. Ultimately, students will learn how to determine their readiness to being a business.

Following Entrepreneurship 101 is Entrepreneurship 102: Legal Issues and the Arts. This course will delve into the legal aspects for the arts, teaching students how to operate a business while keeping within the bounds of the law. Coursework will include sole proprietorship/partnership/LLC/Sub Chapter S, liability issues, copyright and royalty issues, as well as buying/leasing equipment.

Arts Business 201: Marketing for the Arts and Arts Business 202: Accounting and Finance for the Arts will compromise the common core of the certificate and teach students the critical factors of success for businesses. Arts Business 201 involves learning how to successfully market and advertise the arts to the correct demographics. Arts Business 202 will explain about record keeping, financing, budgeting, cash flow projections, and budgeting for both profit and non-profit organizations. Students will grasp the complexities of crucial basic accounting and finance terms.

Students will earn their certificate after completing the two specialization courses: Arts Administration 301: Management in the Arts and Arts Administration 302: Meet the Experts in Your Arts Discipline. Arts Administration 301 teaches how to manage special events, facilities, and performances, while Arts Administration 302 ends the courses with an open panel discussion with successful arts business owners/administrators on a flexible array of topics. The aim of this class is to illustrate how to create networks with successful business owners, obtain tips from experts, and appreciate the commonalities and differences in business and the arts.

Classes will be held Thursdays evening from May 18-June 21, 2006, at $35 per course, $180 for all six classes.
