IPFW Extends Helping Hand to Hurricane Students
(Fort Wayne, Sept. 1, 2005) -- When Hurricane Katrina began wreaking its havoc along the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama gulf coasts, students enrolled in colleges and universities there had no idea their entire fall semester could be affected. The American Council on Education is estimating 75,000 to 100-thousand students in the New Orleans area alone are making other arrangements for autumn classes. IPFW Chancellor Michael Wartell says any of those students who are from northeast Indiana and want to continue their education closer to home, are welcome to come here. “We will work with them in any way we can to enroll them for fall classes.”
Carol Isaacs, director of admissions, says her office has received calls concerning two students at universities in New Orleans who are on their way home to Fort Wayne. “At this point, they are just inquiring, but we’ll certainly try to get them in the classes they need. We’ll also explore financial aid options with any student affected by the hurricane who wants to continue his or her classes here.”
