Dr. Smulkstys came to the Indiana University center in 1959 and retired in 1995 as associate professor emeritus of political science. He received degrees from University of Illinois (A.B., 1953; A.M., 1955) and Indiana University (Ph.D., 1963). He served as Dean of Arts and Letters from 1981-1988 and the Acting Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences from 1988-1989 when he was succeded by David J. Cox. His area of research interest included Marxist theory and practice, totalitarian systems with an emphasis on eastern European countries.
