School Colors

Categories: Topics

1987-88 was a year of controversy regarding the official school colors. Until 1988 IPFW never adopted official colors, leaving sports teams free to use whatever colors were convenient. In the late sixties the teams used blue and white because they got a good deal on a load of blue and white uniforms. In the early seventies the athletic director decided to use a hybrid of IU and Purdue colors and ordered crimson and gold uniforms. In 1987 the administration wanted to return to blue and white but the president of Purdue initially objected. A major campus discussion and controversy arose over IPFW's right to select its own school colors. On December 19, 1987 President Beering endorsed the use of blue and white as athletic colors but required that for official IU and Purdue documents and events, the colors must continue to reflect those of IU and Purdue.
