TEXTBOOK: Calculus - An Applied Approach, 7th Edition, Larson/Edwards

 

            TOPICS COVERED: Chapters 1 - 4, and Sections 5.1 - 5.5

 

            COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of the course, students should:

 

·         Have a better overall understanding of functions and their graphical, numerical, analytical, and verbal representations

·         Be able to mechanically calculate derivatives of simple functions and combinations of functions

·         Understand definite integrals as areas

·         Understanding the relationship between derivatives and integrals

·         Use technology appropriately to gain insight into the solution of a problem

·         Be able to see functions in real-world applications and to develop models in this context

·         Understand derivatives as rates of change and in the context of local linearity

·         Have improved skills at problem solving and critical thinking

·         Have improved skills at writing and explaining math

 

 

            EXAMS: There will be three one-hour exams and a two-hour comprehensive final.

 

 

            GRADING:                Quizzes            15%

                                                Exams              60%

                                                Final                 25%

 

            GRADING SCALE:              A - 90% or above

                                                            B - 80% or above

                                                            C - 70% or above

                                                            D - 60% or above

           

            FINAL EXAM: During the week of May 5 - 10.
