Spring 2010 Section Chair's Statement

I hope everyone's new year is off to a good and productive start. Believe it or not, the Spring Meeting of our Indiana section of the MAA is about two months away! This year's meeting will be at Franklin College, on April 9-10, 2010. Two guest speakers will be Rick Cleary (Bentley College), on "Some Non-standard Applications of Mathematics to Sports", and Eric Rowland (Tulane University), on "Wolfram|Alpha: Inside and Out".

Here are some things you can do to prepare for the meeting:

1) Please consider giving a talk. The deadline for abstracts will be Friday March 26.
2) Encourage your students to attend the meeting and participate in the Friendly Competition

(There is a slight chance that due to room constraints, we may have to restrict the overall number of teams. In the event such a restriction needs to be made, there will probably be a limit on the number of teams any one school can have - but this maximum number of teams is yet to be determined.)

In addition to our usual sessions of contributed talks, we will also have a panel session on the use of technology in the mathematics classroom. As mentioned above, one of our guests is Eric Rowland, who was on the programming teams during the development of Wolfram Alpha, and he has agreed to participate in this panel. If you have experience (either good or bad!) using any of the "new of the new" technology such as Sage or Wolfram Alpha, or the "usual suspects" of Maple or Mathematica, or the growing number of on-line options such as WebWork or MapleTA, and would like to share that experience, please let me know so that I can try to include you on the panel.

During our annual business meeting, we will have two formal appointments: Justin Gash (Franklin College) is appointed Student Activities Coordinator to replace Robert Talbert; Livia Hummel (University of Indianapolis) is appointed to the Distinguished Service Award Selection Committee to replace Jon Lorch. As my term as Chair expires, Vesna Kilibarda (Indiana University Northwest) will become Chair of the section, and the Nominating Committee has put forward Patrick Sullivan (Valparaiso University) as their nominee for Vice Chair during the 2010-11 year. Other nominations for Vice Chair will be accepted, and the membership will then elect our next Vice Chair. As always, we owe many thanks to those who work hard on our behalf.

Speaking of Vice Chairs, Vesna Kilibarda has already been hard at work as current Vice Chair, securing locations for several upcoming meetings:

University of Indianapolis, October 22, Fall 2011
Ball State University, March 23-24, Spring 2012
Butler University, October 20, Fall 2012

The next two immediate meetings after this spring meeting will be

Fall 2010: Purdue North Central, October 16, 2010
Spring 2011: Indiana Wesleyan University, April 8-9, 2011
