FRANKLIN COLLEGE - Franklin , Indiana
The mathematics faculty at Franklin have prominent positions in college
governance this year. Robert Talbert is serving as chair of the
college-wide Promotion and Tenure Committee and John Boardman as
vice-chair of the Faculty Steering Committee, which oversees faculty
governance and serves as liaison between the faculty and the
administration. Both those committees have three members and are
elected by the faculty. Dan Callon is Coordinator of the Liberal Arts
Curriculum and a member of the Academic Advisory Council, having been
appointed by the administration with input from the faculty. Not to be
outdone, first-year faculty member Justin Gash, a DePauw alumnus with a
Ph. D. from Indiana University, was voted by Student Congress as the
faculty member of the month in November.

INDIANA UNIVERSITY - PURDUE UNIVERSITY FORT WAYNE - Fort Wayne, Indiana
Douglas Townsend is now Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Programs
and Director of Graduate Studies.
Lowell Beineke's name was added to Purdue University's Book of Great
Teachers. His term as Editor of The College Mathematics Journal
concluded at the end of 2008.
Student Drew Swartz gave a poster presentation at the Joint Meetings in Washington in January.

INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY - Marion , Indiana
Dr. Gail Greene just finished her fall sabbatical researching programs
for the mathematically gifted at liberal arts colleges. They took five
undergraduates to the Joint Meetings in Washington and are having them
now give "something I learned" talks in our weekly department
colloquium.

TAYLOR UNIVERSITY - Upland, Indiana
Mark Colgan has assumed the role of chair for the Taylor University
Mathematics Department effective January 3, 2009. He replaced Dr. Ron
Benbow.
The Senior Mathematics Capstone class went to the Joint Mathematical
Meetings in Washington, D.C., in January 2009. The students said they
enjoyed the experience, the talks, and the world's longest escalator in
the Western Hemisphere. However, most voted against the Euclidean
Algorithm in the CNN United States of Mathematics Presidential Debate
to the chagrin of their professor Jeremy Case.

UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis, Indiana
Three members of the department took one-semester sabbaticals this
school year: Haitham Alkhateeb and Nadjib Bouzar took the fall off, and
Jeffrey Oaks is taking the spring off. Also, Haitham was recently
promoted to full professor.

WABASH COLLEGE - Crawfordsville, Indiana
Profs. Bob Foote and Will Turner continue their year-long sabbaticals,
and the department is in the process of hiring a tenure-track
replacement for Mike Axtell, who left at the end of the 2007-08
academic year for a tenure-track position at the University of St.
Thomas in Minnesota.
"Modeling Blood Flow in Time Dependence," by Bryant M. Watkins
(University of Maryland, Baltimore County), Bo Xu (Columbia University),
and Dezhi Xu (Wabash College), was among the 2009 MAA Undergraduate
Poster Session Prize winners at the Joint Mathematics meetings in
Washington, D.C. Their research was done in the 2008 Wabash Summer
Institute in Mathematics (WSIM) and advised by Chad Westphal (Wabash
College).
