Hello to all Indiana MAA members. I have been enjoying this very wintery of winters, but
then I have the luxury of living close to where I work so that my commute is a brisk walk
that can be accomplished in almost any weather conditions. A couple of weeks ago, on
my morning walk to work, when the temperatures were in the double digits below zero
degrees Fahrenheit, I saw columns of light streaming up into the air as light from ground
sources reflected off suspended ice crystals in the air. It was so captivating that I forgot
that I really should walk fast in such cold weather.
I hope that some of you were able to attend the Joint Math Meetings in January this
year. I was unable to attend. But I am looking forward to this year's spring Indiana
Section Meeting at IUPUI on March 20-21.
As usual, our Friendly Competition will be held on Friday afternoon, so please
encourage your undergraduates to participate.
We will have two invited speakers. Paul Coe from Dominican University is, among other
things, interested in recreational mathematics. I have heard him give a couple of talks
on the mathematics of TV game shows. His talk should be interesting as well as
entertaining. Dan Teague from North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics has
a variety of interests, including mathematical modeling and mathematical education. He
is also a vice president of the national MAA. I am looking forward to hearing him speak.
We will also have sessions for your contributed talks. I invite you to submit talks and
encourage your students to also submit talks. Graduate student talks are also very
welcome.
Please submit news and announcements for our web newsletter so that we can keep up
to date with what is happening at schools in the section.
I look forward to seeing you next month at the Spring Meeting!
