Spring 2007 Section Chair's Statement

Fellow mathematicians,

The Spring 2007 meeting at the University of Indianapolis March 23-24 will feature Art Benjamin who is one of the 2007-08 Pólya Lecturers. Every five years, the Pólya Lecturer program provides the section a speaker who is to represent the high quality of exposition embodied by George Pólya. Art Benjamin is Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College as well as a professional entertainer who has performed in nightclubs and public gatherings around the world. He will give the after-dinner talk Friday night as well as a Saturday morning presentation.

Saturday afternoon we are fortunate to have Daniel Forger from the University of Michigan whose research in mathematical biology is another mathematical success story. The result published in July 2006 demonstrated that proteins which regulate sleep and biological timing behave much differently than what biologists thought.

The Indiana College Mathematics Competition will again take place Friday afternoon. As the number of teams grows, I would encourage schools to continue to exhibit the original purpose of the competition to “stimulate friendship and mathematical interest.” We are always looking for friendly graders. Interested individuals should see Mohammad Azarian from the University of Evansville.

The spring meeting will highlight several graduate students presenting background material leading up to their research. All in all, I hope that you will find the Indianapolis meeting worthwhile.

Last October, Francis Su gave a great presentation at our experimental fall workshop at Valparaiso. While we will continue to monitor what works best for the fall meeting, the section plans to have contributed talks once again at the 2007 Fall meeting at Manchester, October 27, 2007. In addition to sharing your comments and ideas about the appropriate format with the section leadership, consider giving a presentation at Manchester.

Continue to do good work! I hope to see you at the University of Indianapolis March 23.

Jeremy Case
Chair of the Indiana Section of the MAA
