Fall 2007 Section Chair's Statement

Fellow mathematicians,

I hope that the school year started well for all of you. I certainly felt like I was scrambling when classes began, but I am beginning to settle into a rhythm.

I would like to extend an invitation to the Fall 2007 meeting on October 27 at Manchester College. Our featured speaker will be John Swallow. John is the Kimbrough Professor of Mathematics and Humanities at Davidson College. John's interests are in Galois Theory and in 2005 he ran an MAA minicourse on teaching Galois Theory for undergraduates. He has written an undergraduate text, published by Cambridge University Press, which features an exploratory approach to learning Galois Theory. We are privileged to have him come and speak at our Fall meeting.

John will be presenting two talks. One will be on the history of Fermat's Last Theorem, and the other will be on Circular Irrationalities. I am looking forward to hearing John speak.

We will also have time to hear your presentations. I invite you to submit talks and encourage you to have some of your students submit talks as well.

Please keep the dates of March 28-29 on your calendars for the Spring Meeting at St. Mary's College. We will, as usual, have the friendly competition, invited and contributed talks.

Also, I invite you to submit news and announcements for our web newsletter. It is always a pleasure to read what is happening at colleges and universities in Indiana.

I am looking forward to seeing you in October.

Patricia Oakley
Chair of the Indiana Section of the MAA
