Jim Sweeney brings a wealth of experience to the IPFW Journalism Department and his classrooms as evidenced by the following.

From September 1967 to June 1984, Sweeney was a teacher and publications director in high school and college. He also:

  • taught journalism, English, photography, and history in high schools in Fort Wayne and La Porte, Indiana.
  • taught masters level and undergrad classes at Ball State University both part time, and full time.
  • was awarded Distinguished Service Award from Ohio University, E.W. Scripps School of Journalism in 1988.
  • advised school newspapers, yearbooks, and magazines for fifteen years.

From June 1984 to June 1990, Sweeney was sales manager and publication consultant for the Delmar Printing Company. While employed there he:

  • built territory gross from $15,000 to over $300,000.
  • earned "Territory Growth Award" four times out of five possible opportunities.
  • won top award in all three divisions for Company Contest at Delmar's 1989 National Convention
  • helped yearbook advisers win fourteen top awards in National and Regional Yearbook Contests
  • worked with eleven schools to set up a desktop publishing system in IBM and Macintosh environments.

From August 1990 to March 1993, Sweeney was a media consultant and graphic designer for Tri-ALSA, Indiana State Area Library Service Authority and also did business as Communication/ By Design -- his own consulting business. During this time period he:

  • designed and produced conference booklet for Governor's Conference on Library and Information Science .
  • gained experience in using desktop publishing in both IBM and Macintosh environments.

From March 1993 to present, Sweeney works as training coordinator for Broadway GE Motors & Fort Wayne Operations GEMIS. His responsibilities include work team training, manufacturing training, & environmental, health and safety training. He has also:

  • organized and helped implement three plant Continuous Improvement Team at Fort Wayne Operations.
  • begun a relationship with Ford joint venture plant to exchange Best Practices involving team work.
  • made application for State Department of Commerce T2000 Training Grant, awarded maximum amount.

Sweeney has been a adjunct faculty member at IPFW since December 1992 and teaches communications and journalism. While at IPFW he has been:

  • nominated and elected to Board of Directors of IPFW Campus newspaper, The Communicator.
  • photography judge for Indiana State Fair and county 4H photography programs since 1988.
