Rowand's practical experience in the field of photojournalism began in Dayton, Ohio, where she spent from June 1981 - September 1981 as a photo intern at both the Dayton Daily News and the Journal Herald newspapers. She also interned at the Journal Gazette Newspaper in Fort Wayne, Indiana, from September 1981 - April 1982.
Rowand accepted a position with the Journal Gazette in August 1983, and has spent the last 15 years as a photojournalist. From October 1987 - June 1990, she also served as photo editor.
Rowand has been an associate professor of journalism at IPFW since August 1987, an has taught the Visual Communications classes, J210 and J280.
