Hubartt began his journalism career as a sportswriter for The News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Indiana, upon graduation from Indiana University in 1971. He became Executive Sports Editor in 1982 and supervised the entire sports department, including a staff of 11 people. He was responsible for all sports section content.

Hubartt was promoted to Executive News Editor in 1995, where he worked in conjunction with all departments in the newsroom as well as other departments in the building. His primary responsibility was Page 1 each day as he conducted the morning planning meeting to decide what would appear on the front page. He also supervised the content of the paper in terms of state, national and international news.

In 2000, Hubartt was promoted to the position of Senior Editor, and was in charge of managing the newsroom budget, while continuing to fill in as news editor on a regular basis. In 2003 his duties were expanded to include overseeing the news desk, copy desk, design department, photo department and the editorial systems manager in assisting the newspaper's executive editor in managing newsroom operations. He still fills in as news editor as needed and is also in charge of daily radio news broadcasts from the newsroom on local commercial radio.

Hubartt began teaching at IPFW in 1987. As an associate professor at IPFW, Hubartt teaches Writing for Mass Media.
